Background of the study
Digital storytelling has emerged as an innovative medium for preserving and disseminating local histories. In Benue State, this modern approach leverages digital media to document oral histories, cultural narratives, and community experiences. Digital storytelling integrates multimedia elements—such as audio, video, and text—to create immersive narratives that engage diverse audiences (Uche, 2023). By capturing personal testimonies and traditional knowledge, digital storytelling bridges the gap between past and present, ensuring that local histories are accessible to future generations. This process has been particularly valuable in regions where written records are limited or at risk of being lost due to rapid modernization. Digital platforms enable community members to share their stories, thereby fostering a collective memory and reinforcing cultural identity. Despite its potential, challenges such as digital literacy gaps, limited access to technology, and concerns over the authenticity of digital content persist. This study evaluates the role of digital storytelling in preserving local histories in Benue State, highlighting its contributions to cultural preservation and community empowerment while addressing the challenges that hinder its effectiveness (Onyema, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Local histories in Benue State face the threat of gradual loss due to modernization and inadequate documentation. Although digital storytelling presents a promising solution, there are challenges related to technological access, digital literacy, and the standardization of narrative quality. These barriers restrict the widespread adoption and effectiveness of digital storytelling as a tool for preserving cultural heritage. The study aims to address these issues by evaluating how digital storytelling initiatives contribute to the preservation of local histories and identifying key challenges that must be overcome (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of digital storytelling in preserving local histories in Benue State.
To identify challenges encountered in the implementation of digital storytelling initiatives.
To recommend strategies for enhancing the impact of digital storytelling on cultural preservation.
